If the VM's performance isn't adequate & can't be improved, you may want to resort to dual-boot - but keep in mind that this is a risk to your system & the data on it. I have tried everything from enabling virtualization to messing with almost every setting on virtualbox. In your case, I don't know if the system resources will suffice, so I'd suggest you start with a VM & see how it performs, & try tweaking it as needed. Im running Kali linux in VirtualBox and it couldnt find any network adapters or wlan0.So, I followed some instructions I found about downgrading to compat-wireless-.p.tar.bz2 and it temporarily fixed the wlan0 problem, but still wouldnt find any wireless networks.
